Several companies who currently manufacture this single-ply material must meet the specifications for the various grades determined by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) under ASTM D6878 / D6878M. The product received the ASTM standard for single-ply roofing in 2006, largely though the efforts of Paul Oliveira of Firestone, a researcher who helped develop the specifications.

Having the specs in place is good for the future of TPO, as there are now criteria for determining grades of TPO.
